News published on October 29, 2026. The situation may have changed since then.

In the middle of Day of the Dead season, the cutest video on social media in Mexico has no people in it: its star is a squirrel eating a tamale.

What you see

A squirrel appears eating a sweet tamale, as if it were a person having breakfast.

Sweet tamales are usually made with corn dough, sugar and sometimes raisins or pink coloring. They are typical of celebrations in Mexico.

Why it went viral

Because it looks like it was made with artificial intelligence, but it wasn't. That's why many users joke that "Mexico beats AI": reality is stranger than any made-up video.

El Heraldo de México published the video on Wednesday, October 28, and it has been shared nonstop ever since.

A tip

Although it's funny, wildlife experts advise not giving human food to wild animals: sugar and dough are not good for them, and they get used to approaching people.
