The Bolsonaro family dominated Brazil's politics for years. Today, the former president and his four sons all face investigations, trials or convictions. Here is a summary of each.

Jair Bolsonaro, the father

He was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup. He is serving the sentence at home in Brasília for health reasons: the Supreme Court upheld that house arrest in July 2026.

Jair Bolsonaro was president of Brazil from 2019 to 2022 and lost his re-election bid to Lula da Silva.

Flávio, the eldest

He was the family's presidential candidate and lost the runoff to Lula. He then left Brazil for the United States. Police are investigating him for alleged corruption, money laundering and currency evasion linked to the financing of a film about his father. He denies it and has not been convicted.

Eduardo

The Supreme Court sentenced him in June 2026 to four years and two months in prison for coercion: he tried to get the United States to put pressure on his father's trial. He lives in the US and lost his seat as a congressman for not showing up.

Carlos

In February 2026, prosecutors in Rio de Janeiro reopened an investigation into an alleged rachadinha scheme in his former city council office: keeping part of his staff's salaries.

Jair Renan, the youngest

In 2024, a Brasília court accepted charges against him for alleged money laundering and use of false documents related to his businesses.
