News published on October 29, 2026. The situation may have changed since then.

A few days before the midterm elections on November 3, a new poll brings bad news for Donald Trump.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll published on October 27, 2026, only 32% of Americans approve of his job performance. That is one point more than the previous week, when it stood at 31%, his lowest level across his two terms.

Democrats ahead

The poll asked registered voters which party they will support for Congress:

- Democrats: 47% - Republicans: 36% - Don't know: 11%

Among voters most likely to go to the polls, the Democratic lead is 9 points: 53% to 44%.

46% of Democrats say they are very enthusiastic about this election; among Republicans, only 30%.

Wallets weigh heavily

73% believe the cost of living is heading in the wrong direction. Inflation has risen since Trump ordered strikes on Iran in February, which made gasoline more expensive.

Before that war, Reuters/Ipsos polls showed people trusted Republicans more to handle the economy. Now 37% prefer Democrats and 33% Republicans.

What is at stake

Analysts believe Democrats have a good chance of winning the House of Representatives, but face a harder climb in the Senate.

If Trump loses either chamber, it would be much harder for him to push his plans through in his last two years in office. Even so, nobody knows how many people will turn out to vote.

The poll was conducted online over five days among 1,679 adults, with a margin of error of about 2 points.
