Intel released its third-quarter results (July to September) on October 29, 2026. They were better than the company itself had promised. Even so, the stock market reacted with a plunge.
The key figures
- Revenue: $16.5 billion, up 21% from a year ago. - Data center and artificial intelligence: $7.3 billion, up 78%. It is its best growth in 15 years, according to its chief financial officer. - Chips for computers and devices: $8.1 billion, down 5%. - Gross margin: 43%, compared with 38.2% a year ago. - Earnings per share: $0.60. A year ago it was $0.90, but that included the sale of most of Altera.
Intel can't keep up: its priority now is making more Xeon server processors because demand exceeds production.
Why the shares sank
The problem is the forecast. For the last quarter of the year, Intel expects revenue of between $15 billion and $16 billion, less than now. And its gross margin would drop to 37.1%.
Shares fell about 18% in early trading after the close, according to The Motley Fool. That day they had already closed down 3.6%.
What its leaders say
CEO Lip-Bu Tan said demand for its processors remains strong.
Chief financial officer David Zinsner warned that the PC slowdown will continue at least through the first half of 2027.
The big bet
Artificial intelligence is now giving Intel a boost in servers. Its factory business, Intel Foundry, also grew 58%. But the computer division remains weak.
