News published on October 29, 2026. The situation may have changed since then.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, plans to buy chips from Google for its artificial intelligence. The tech outlet The Information reported it as an exclusive on the night of October 27, 2026, citing a person familiar with the matter.

They are TPUs, the chips Google designs to train and run AI models.

Not official yet

Neither OpenAI nor Google has confirmed it. OpenAI declined to comment and Google did not respond in time, according to 24/7 Wall St.

The price, the number of chips and the delivery dates are also unknown.

From renting to buying

This is not the first time OpenAI has used these chips. In June 2025, the Reuters news agency reported that OpenAI had started renting TPUs in Google's cloud.

Buying them would be a bigger step: owning the chips instead of paying by the hour. OpenAI is also looking for an engineer to adapt its models to TPUs, according to a job listing cited by Decrypt.

Google already rents its TPU chips to Anthropic, Apple and Citadel Securities.

A blow to Nvidia

So far, OpenAI is one of Nvidia's biggest customers, the company that dominates AI chips. Buying Google chips would let it rely less on Nvidia.

OpenAI is also preparing its own chip, called Jalapeño, made with Broadcom. It is expected to arrive by the end of 2026.

The stock market reacted

After the news, shares of Alphabet, Google's parent company, closed up 1.19% at $320.58. Nvidia shares also rose 0.9%.
