News published on October 28, 2026. The situation may have changed since then.

Donald Trump still hasn't gotten over the Nobel Peace Prize. During a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, the US president lashed out at Norway, the country that awards the prize, and his words are going around the world.

What he said

"I want nothing to do with Norway", Trump told his supporters. And he added: "Frankly, Norway stinks", calling it, with a swear word, a trash country.

He also linked the prize to immigration: he said he doesn't want Norwegian immigrants "because I didn't get the Nobel Prize", and that he prefers Danes.

The Nobel Peace Prize is decided by a committee appointed by Norway's parliament and is awarded in Oslo every December 10.

Who won the Nobel

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize went to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a South African jurist who served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Trump said she is a "liberal person who works at the United Nations" whom "nobody has ever heard of", and that the prize has been "discredited" by "radical ideologues".

Why he thinks he deserves it

Trump repeats that he has ended eight wars and has "two more on the way". He also criticized the Nobel that Barack Obama received in 2009 and claimed that María Corina Machado, last year's winner, gave him her medal.

Why now

The rally was part of the campaign for the November 3 midterm elections. Trump had already complained about the Nobel on October 8 and 10, when the prize was announced. This time he went further and insulted an entire country, which is also a NATO ally of the United States.
