British actor Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the age of 86, at his home in Los Angeles.

His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, announced it. She said the cause was Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. His wife, singer Sunny Ozell, was by his side.

From the stage to the stars

Stewart was born in 1940 in Mirfield, England. He started out in theater and in the 1960s joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, one of the most famous theater companies in the world.

In 1987 came the role that made him famous all over the planet: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in *Star Trek: The Next Generation*. He played him for seven seasons and in four films, and returned years later in the series *Star Trek: Picard*.

Patrick Stewart played Professor X, the leader of the X-Men, in more than six films.

Professor X

For many young fans, Stewart was above all Charles Xavier, Professor X, the leader of the X-Men.

He had returned to that role for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel's next film, which opens in December 2026.

Awards

- He won three Olivier Awards, the top prizes in British theater. - He won a Grammy in 1995. - The Queen made him a knight in 2010. That is why he was called Sir Patrick Stewart.

The farewells

William Shatner, Star Trek's Captain Kirk, remembered him as a friend and a magnificent actor. Hugh Jackman, his X-Men co-star, said he was a great friend. Marvel Studios also paid tribute.

His family asked that, instead of flowers, people make donations to Alzheimer's research.
