Venezuelan catcher William Contreras was named 2026 World Series MVP, the award for the most valuable player.

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday, October 28, and won the series 4-1. It is the first World Series title in the team's history.

What he did in the series

Contreras, 28, went 8 for 21 (.381) and drove in 4 runs.

But he also shone behind the plate. The Rays stole more bases than any other team in the American League, and Contreras threw out 4 of the 9 runners who tried to steal on him.

He is the first catcher to win the award since Salvador Pérez, another Venezuelan, with the Kansas City Royals in 2015.

Contreras and his Venezuelan teammates Jackson Chourio and Antonio Senzatela have won both the World Baseball Classic and the World Series. Before them, only two 2017 Astros teammates had done it.

A title for both brothers

In the stands was his older brother, Willson Contreras, who plays for the Boston Red Sox. He came to the game wearing William's jersey.

Willson had already won it all with the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Now both brothers have a World Series ring.

A standout season

In the regular season, Contreras hit .270 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI. He was one of two Brewers picked for the All-Star Game.

He had strong rivals for the award, such as fellow Venezuelan Jackson Chourio, who went 11 for 24. In the end, the votes went to the catcher.
