On the night of October 28 to 29, Ukraine launched one of the biggest drone attacks of the entire war against Russia.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, its air defenses shot down 1,214 drones over 19 regions of the country. These are Moscow's figures: no one has been able to verify them independently.
Moscow, the main target
Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 613 drones were headed for the capital and its surroundings. That is a record for the city.
Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports stopped operating for about two hours. So far, no casualties or damage have been reported in Russia.
The previous record was on September 20: 1,110 drones, 450 of them aimed at Moscow.
In the middle of the Africa summit
The attack came while Moscow was hosting the 3rd Russia-Africa summit, with more than twenty African leaders.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called it very strange because it happened during an event of that size. He said air defenses worked and that, in his view, the attack shows Russia must continue its offensive.
Deaths in Ukraine
On the same day, Russian drone attacks killed at least 19 people in Ukrainian cities:
- Dnipro: at least 14 dead at the train station. - Chernihiv: two teenagers aged 15 were killed. - Kremenchuk: three dead in an apartment building.
President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the United States and the European Union for easing some sanctions on Russia.
The Kherson truce holds
Meanwhile, the humanitarian truce in the Kherson region is still in place, allowing aid to arrive and civilians to leave Oleshky.
